IGAN – A wasp nest the size of a football was successfully destroyed near the Kampung Sekerang public library in Igan on Wednesday evening, following swift action by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Matu District.
The District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) received an emergency call reporting the presence of the nest in bushes close to the library.
Concerned residents highlighted the potential danger posed to the community, particularly to children and staff who frequently use the facility.
Upon arrival, APM personnel were guided to the site by the complainant. The team prepared specialised equipment before commencing the operation.
Using insecticide sprays, including Ridsect, combined with controlled fire application, the officers neutralised the nest and ensured the area was safe.
The operation was completed without incident, and the site was confirmed secure. The intervention prevented possible stings and reduced the risk of further nesting in the same location.
Wasp infestations are a recurring issue in Sarawak’s rural and semi-urban areas, where vegetation provides suitable nesting grounds.
While wasps play a role in controlling other insect populations, their proximity to public spaces often leads to safety concerns.
Emergency responses such as this highlight the importance of vigilance and community cooperation in reporting hazards promptly.
The Civil Defence Force continues to emphasise its readiness to respond to diverse emergencies, ranging from wildlife encounters to environmental hazards.
Similar operations across Sarawak have included snake rescues, bee nest removals, and assistance in animal-related incidents, reflecting the agency’s broad scope of responsibilities.
Residents are reminded that emergency assistance is available through the PKOD APM Matu District hotline at 084-832-208 or the national emergency line 999.
The Civil Defence Force’s guiding principles of integrity, speed, and preparedness remain central to its mission of safeguarding communities.
