SELANGAU – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Selangau District successfully carried out an operation to remove a dangerous wasp nest at Sekolah Kebangsaan St. Mark, Nanga Tamin, on Monday, 13 July 2026.
The District Operations Control Centre received an emergency call from the school reporting the presence of an insect nest within the premises. Upon inspection, responders discovered a large wasp nest, roughly the size of a Kancil car tyre, located beneath the school’s water tank platform.
Three APM members were deployed to the site and immediately began the removal process. Using Ridsect spray, the team destroyed the nest safely, ensuring that no harm came to students, staff, or personnel involved. The operation concluded smoothly without any untoward incident.
Authorities have advised the school to remain vigilant against poisonous insects, as such nests can pose serious risks to children and staff. Wasp stings are known to cause severe allergic reactions in some individuals, and the presence of nests in school compounds is considered a significant safety hazard.
In Sarawak, wasp nest incidents are not uncommon, particularly in rural districts where vegetation and open structures provide ideal nesting sites. Emergency responders often stress the importance of reporting sightings promptly to prevent accidents. Schools and communities are encouraged to conduct regular inspections to identify potential threats early.
APM Selangau has reaffirmed its commitment to community safety, highlighting its readiness to respond to diverse emergencies ranging from medical cases to wildlife threats. The unit continues to emphasise the importance of public cooperation in reporting hazards, ensuring that assistance can be delivered quickly and effectively.
Local education officials have welcomed the swift intervention, noting that the presence of a large wasp nest near a school could have posed serious risks to students. Preventive measures, including clearing vegetation and monitoring high-risk areas such as water tanks and storage facilities, are being encouraged to reduce future incidents.
The successful operation at SK St. Mark reflects the professionalism and preparedness of APM Selangau. Their ability to act quickly and safely demonstrates the importance of trained personnel in safeguarding schools and public spaces across Sarawak.
Residents in Selangau are reminded that APM can be contacted directly in the event of emergencies. The district hotline, 084-891285, is available 24 hours a day, alongside the national emergency line, 999.
As Sarawak continues to strengthen its emergency response systems, the cooperation between schools, local authorities, and civil defence teams remains crucial. The Selangau case highlights how preparedness and swift intervention can prevent potential harm, reinforcing public confidence in the state’s emergency services.
