The programme, which ran from 7.30 am to 5.00 pm, forms part of DBKU’s annual initiative to encourage gardening culture, promote sustainable landscapes and raise public awareness about plant management and environmental conservation.

The event was officiated by DBKU Council Member Tuan Haji Abdul Baderi bin Sahmat. Also present were DBKU Director Encik Ramzi bin Abdillah and Deputy Director of DBKU Landscape Development Services Department, Puan Maggie Anak Tomeng.

Their attendance underscored the importance of community involvement in environmental initiatives. Visitors were offered more than just plant sales, with a variety of sharing sessions and demonstrations conducted by experts and related agencies.

These included practical tips on plant care, sustainable methods of managing organic waste for compost production, and insights into the benefits and potential of bamboo plants.

A wide range of activities catered to different age groups and interests. Among them were a composition competition, a bonsai decoration contest, sand art, T-shirt painting, and colouring competitions.

Demonstrations and briefings were also held, covering topics such as bamboo cultivation by the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC), bonsai management by Kejiranan Mesra (KJM), compost production by DBKU’s Health and Environment Division, and plant management techniques by DBKU’s Landscape Division.

The bonsai and bamboo sessions proved particularly popular, highlighting the growing interest in specialised plant care and sustainable landscaping.

Meanwhile, the creative competitions provided opportunities for children and families to engage with environmental themes in a fun and interactive way.

DBKU emphasised that the Depo Nursery Open Day is designed to empower communities by instilling appreciation for green living and sustainable practices.

By combining education, hands-on demonstrations and recreational activities, the programme aims to build a stronger culture of environmental responsibility among Kuching residents.

The initiative reflects DBKU’s broader vision of creating a greener, healthier city where communities actively participate in conservation efforts.

With increasing awareness of climate change and environmental challenges, events such as these play a vital role in encouraging sustainable lifestyles and fostering civic pride.
