KUCHING – Sarawak is stepping up preparations to address the challenges of an ageing population by building new welfare centres dedicated to senior citizens.
On 5 July, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg presented RM1.7 million in funding to the Petra Jaya Welfare Association (PKPJ) for the construction of the Sri Satok Senior Citizens Activity Centre (PAWE).
The new facility will be built on a 2,137 square metre plot of land next to the Datuk Amar Juma’ani Welfare Centre (PKDAJ) along Jalan Kulas.
“We have acquired a plot of land next to this centre which will be a centre for senior citizens, especially in the Satok area and also the area adjacent to Satok, to carry out welfare activities,” the premier explained.
The initiative is part of Sarawak’s proactive strategy to prepare for the ageing population wave expected to begin in 2027.
The Premier emphasised that welfare centres are essential to provide social support for the elderly, ensuring they have access to facilities that promote well-being and community engagement.
Plans are also underway to establish another similar centre in Samariang, Petra Jaya, expanding the social protection network for senior citizens in urban areas.
These centres will serve as hubs for recreational, educational, and community activities, offering a conducive environment for older residents to remain active and connected.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the state government is also focusing on environmental sustainability. A 600-acre green zone is being developed between Kuching and Samarahan in line with the Low Carbon Smart City Policy, providing a healthier environment for all age groups.
The fund handover ceremony was officiated at PKDAJ and attended by Sarawak Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Ibrahim Baki and Kuching North Mayor Dato Haji Hilmy Othman.
DBKU reaffirmed its commitment to developing Kuching North into a senior-friendly city that is inclusive, safe, accessible, and sustainable.
Officials highlighted that the construction of PAWE Sri Satok represents a significant step in strengthening the well-being of senior citizens.
By offering dedicated spaces for social, recreational, and learning activities, the centre will help ensure that no group is left behind in the flow of urban development.
The initiative reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of building a society that values inclusivity and prepares for demographic shifts.
With ageing populations becoming a global challenge, Sarawak’s approach demonstrates foresight in balancing social welfare with sustainable urban planning.
