SIBU – The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) successfully contained a fire near the airport signal light along Jalan Sibu Durin on 4 July, preventing further damage and ensuring public safety.
The incident, reported on Saturday, involved a blaze covering an estimated one-acre area. Responding swiftly, the Sibu Jaya Fire and Rescue Station’s Charlie Team deployed the LFRT Artego fire engine (BJU 6191) to the site.
Operation Commander PBK I Badrulhisam bin Bujang led the response, supported by PBK II TBK I Mazlan bin Abu, PBB Ralph bin Abdullah, PBB Ammar Asraf bin Azmi, and PB Mohammad Norizan bin Razali.
The control room was managed by PBB Caesar Bantin Anak Barau. Upon arrival, the team conducted a size-up and confirmed the fire was active.
Firefighters, equipped with full personal protective gear, used a single line flow to pump water from the machinery tank until the blaze was fully extinguished.
The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Lanang Patrol Unit also assisted, with two members helping to secure the area and manage traffic. The fire site was located approximately four kilometres from the station, allowing for a rapid response.
Once the situation was declared safe, the team returned to base. No injuries were reported among officers or members of the public.
Authorities praised the professionalism and efficiency of the firefighters, noting their fast and friendly service in line with JBPM’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
The operation highlighted the importance of inter-agency cooperation, with police and civil defence forces working alongside JBPM to ensure effective emergency management.
The incident serves as a reminder of the risks posed by sudden fires, particularly in areas near critical infrastructure such as airports.
Officials continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report emergencies promptly to ensure swift action.
