SONG – Search operations are continuing for a drowning victim in Nanga Bangkit, Song, with multiple agencies working together to locate the missing individual.
On 5 July, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Song District confirmed that 22 personnel from various agencies were deployed to the area.
The operation also involved the assistance of the Fire and Rescue Department’s K9 unit to strengthen search efforts.
The victim has been identified as 56-year-old Sumok Anak Jugah, an Iban resident. He was reported missing after leaving home on 3 July to purchase a gas can in Nanga Bangkit.
Concern arose when residents discovered his longboat abandoned upstream along the Bangkit River. Rescue teams have been combing the river and surrounding areas since the report was lodged.
Authorities confirmed that no incidents occurred involving officers or members of the public during the ongoing operation.
The search is being coordinated through the Song District Operations Control Centre (PKOD), with emergency cases directed to the national hotline at 999.
Officials emphasised that community cooperation remains vital in supporting search and rescue missions, particularly in rural areas where river travel is common.
APM reiterated its commitment to serving the nation under its guiding principles of readiness, integrity, and rapid response.
The agency continues to remind the public of the importance of safety when travelling by river, especially during unpredictable weather conditions.
The incident has highlighted the risks faced by rural communities reliant on river transport. Authorities are expected to maintain operations until the victim is found, with support from local residents and partner agencies.
