Grassroots Leaders Urged to Empower Youth Amid Global Challenges

KUCHING – Grassroots leaders have been urged to take a more proactive role in equipping the younger generation with knowledge and skills to navigate increasingly complex global challenges.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, emphasised the importance of preparing strong human capital to ensure Sarawak’s people are not left behind in seizing opportunities created under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS). He made the call during the Sejijak Regatta 2026 Postponement Ceremony at Kampung Sejijak Jetty on 12 July.

Fadillah highlighted that geopolitical instability at the international level can directly affect the national economy, leading to rising costs of living. He explained that when supplies are insufficient, costs increase, and this has a knock-on effect on other goods and services, particularly in sectors dependent on oil and gas such as transportation and energy generation. “This is the challenge being faced at the national and state levels,” he said.

He stressed that education must remain a priority to produce a generation that is knowledgeable, skilled, and competitive in line with technological developments and future industrial needs. By focusing on education, Sarawak can ensure its youth are prepared to meet the demands of a rapidly changing global economy.

Fadillah also called on communities to preserve unity, strengthen cooperation, and maintain political stability, which he described as the foundation for sustainable development and long-term well-being. He noted that without stability, efforts to empower the younger generation and build resilience would be undermined.

Turning to the regatta, Fadillah said the traditional water sport, organised annually in 11 locations across Sarawak, should be managed systematically and with high impact. He suggested that the regatta could be further developed as a tourism product capable of attracting more visitors, thereby contributing to the state’s cultural and economic growth.

The 2026 Sejijak International Open River King Regatta concluded with the Todak Berjaya team emerging as champions in the main category. The Sinaran Ratu Siska team secured second place, while GP Binladin Pantai Damai finished third. The competition showcased the vibrancy of Sarawak’s traditional sporting culture and its potential to draw wider recognition.

The ceremony was attended by Abdul Wahab Rahim, Director of the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS), and Mohd Nusi Jimali, Chairman of the 2026 Sejijak Regatta and Head of Sejijak Village. Their presence reflected the strong community support for the regatta and its role in promoting local traditions.

The event highlighted how cultural activities such as the regatta can serve as platforms for community engagement, while also reinforcing the importance of preparing the younger generation to face global uncertainties. Fadillah’s remarks underscored the need for grassroots leaders to balance cultural preservation with forward-looking strategies that empower youth and strengthen Sarawak’s resilience.

As Sarawak continues to pursue its development agenda, the call for grassroots leaders to empower young people resonates strongly. By investing in education, fostering unity, and promoting cultural heritage, the state aims to build a generation capable of meeting global challenges while contributing to local prosperity.
