KOTA BHARU – The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) in Kelantan, working in collaboration with the Kota Bharu Municipal Council (MPKB), carried out an integrated enforcement operation on 13 July 2026 targeting business premises around Kota Bharu. The initiative was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen immigration law enforcement and curb the presence of undocumented migrants.

The operation began at 10.00 am and involved 18 officers from the Kelantan State Immigration Enforcement Division, supported by nine officers from MPKB. Their combined efforts reflected the importance of inter-agency cooperation in addressing immigration challenges and ensuring compliance with national laws.

Deputy Director of State Immigration (Control), YBrs Puan Ruzaana binti Mohamed, was present to oversee the operation. Her attendance underscored the department’s commitment to maintaining strict oversight and ensuring that enforcement activities are carried out effectively.

During the exercise, 57 individuals were inspected. Sixteen foreigners were detained, comprising seven Indonesians, five Thais, one Indian, and three Pakistanis. The detainees included 11 men and five women aged between 28 and 45 years.

Authorities confirmed that all detainees will be placed at the Tanah Merah Immigration Detention Depot for investigation and follow-up action. They are suspected of committing offences under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963.

The Immigration Department emphasised that enforcement operations will continue to be intensified across Kelantan. Officials reiterated that strict action will be taken not only against undocumented migrants but also against employers and individuals who harbour or facilitate foreigners in violation of immigration laws.

The department highlighted that such operations are crucial to safeguarding national security and maintaining social stability. By targeting business premises suspected of employing undocumented workers, enforcement agencies aim to deter illegal practices and reinforce compliance with immigration regulations.

Officials also reminded the public and employers of their responsibility to comply with the law. Those found guilty of protecting or employing undocumented migrants risk facing legal consequences. The department encouraged community members to provide information that could assist in identifying and apprehending offenders, stressing that public cooperation is vital in ensuring effective enforcement.

The joint operation in Kota Bharu reflects Malaysia’s broader strategy of combining resources and expertise from multiple agencies to address complex immigration challenges. By working together, the Immigration Department and MPKB aim to deliver stronger enforcement outcomes and uphold the integrity of the country’s immigration system.

The arrests highlight the effectiveness of coordinated enforcement in detecting and addressing immigration offences. As Malaysia continues to face challenges related to cross-border movements, integrated operations remain a key tool in maintaining order and protecting the rights of legal residents.
