SIBU – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has intensified enforcement against illegal racing in Sibu, following repeated public complaints about dangerous activities on local roads.

On 4 July, JPJ’s Sibu Operations Unit carried out a motorcycle ops patrol across the town, including static enforcement along Jalan Awang Ramli Amit.

The operation, which began at midnight and continued into the early morning, targeted areas frequently reported by residents as hotspots for illegal racing.

During the operation, officers inspected 65 vehicles of various types. Several offences were detected, ranging from driving without a valid licence to failing to display the mandatory “P” identification plate.

Other violations included poor vehicle maintenance and technical issues that rendered some motorcycles unsafe for use on public roads.

JPJ confirmed that enforcement action was taken against all offenders in accordance with existing laws. The department stressed that illegal racing and non-compliance with road regulations pose serious risks to public safety, and such activities will not be tolerated.

Authorities urged the public to continue cooperating by obeying traffic laws and reporting suspicious or dangerous behaviour to help curb illegal racing.

JPJ highlighted that community vigilance plays a crucial role in ensuring safer roads for all users. The department also reiterated its commitment to intensifying enforcement operations across Sarawak.

By maintaining regular patrols and targeted crackdowns, JPJ aims to keep roads orderly, safe, and free from unlawful activities that endanger lives.

Illegal racing has long been a concern in urban centres such as Sibu, where densely populated areas and busy roads increase the risks of accidents.

JPJ’s proactive measures are part of a broader effort to reduce traffic-related incidents and promote responsible driving habits among motorists.

The operation reflects JPJ’s wider strategy of combining enforcement with public awareness campaigns to instil discipline among road users.

By addressing both reckless behaviour and technical vehicle issues, the department seeks to create a safer environment for drivers, riders, and pedestrians alike.
