Husband and Widow Among Couples Arrested in Khalwat on Merdeka Night

Lahad Datu – What should have been a night of unity, patriotism, and gratitude turned into disgrace for three couples who were caught in khalwat (close proximity) during an integrated operation in Lahad Datu late last night.

One of the most shocking discoveries was that one of the men arrested was a married man, found together with a widow inside a hotel room. Both were detained when enforcement officers carried out inspections in several hotels across the district.

The Integrated Ops (Ops Bersepadu) was led by the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) Lahad Datu, assisted by officers from the Kota Kinabalu Headquarters, JHEAINS Tungku, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), and the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM).

According to Lahad Datu JHEAINS Religious Administrative Officer, Ustaz Mardi Ariffin, the operation started at 9pm and ended around 1am.

“A total of 10 hotels were inspected, covering more than 60 rooms. As a result, three couples were arrested for khalwat. Among the seized items were condoms, lubricants, and so-called ‘magic tissues’, believed to be intended for immoral use,” he said.

Ustaz Mardi reminded the Muslim community to avoid acts of adultery and immorality, especially during significant moments such as the nation’s Independence Day.

“Obey the Sharia laws of this country. Do not taint Merdeka night with behaviour that brings shame and invites the wrath of Allah,” he stressed.

The arrested couples were taken to Lahad Datu District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further action under Section 84 (Khalwat) of the Sabah State Sharia Criminal Offences Enactment No. 3/1995.

If convicted, offenders face fines of up to RM2,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both. Female offenders may also be ordered to stay in a welfare home for up to three years.

This case highlights the continuous efforts of religious authorities and enforcement agencies to uphold moral values and prevent misconduct within society.
