KUCHING – Staff of the Council of the City of Kuching South (MBKS) came together on 24 June 2026 to celebrate Gawai Dayak in a spirit of fellowship and unity.
The event, held under the theme of Ramah Tamah Gawai Dayak Bersama Kakitangan MBKS, highlighted the importance of cultural traditions in strengthening teamwork and community bonds within the council.
MBKS, the largest of Sarawak’s 27 local councils, serves approximately 350,000 residents in a modern urban setting.
As the most frontline tier of Sarawak’s government, expectations of its staff remain high in terms of service delivery.
The celebration provided an opportunity for employees to take a break from their demanding responsibilities, reconnect with colleagues, and renew their commitment to teamwork.
The gathering featured in-house entertainment, traditional decorations, and colourful attire, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Sarawak.
Staff members showcased hospitality and solidarity, embodying the values of respect and inclusivity that underpin Sarawak’s nation-building efforts.
The event was described as a true representation of the Sarawak spirit, where unity across races and religions is celebrated as part of the state’s identity.
Dr Sim Kui Hian, who attended the event, expressed appreciation for the efforts of MBKS staff in organising the celebration.
He noted that such occasions are vital for maintaining morale and fostering a sense of belonging among employees.
“Once in a while, we need to come together to de-stress, to celebrate our festivals such as Gawai, to renew fellowship among the staff and strengthen teamwork,” he remarked.
The Gawai Dayak festival, traditionally observed by the Dayak community, has become a wider celebration of Sarawak’s multicultural society.
It is marked by gatherings, traditional music, dance, and food, symbolising gratitude for the harvest and hope for prosperity.
Within MBKS, the celebration served not only as a cultural observance but also as a reminder of the council’s role in promoting inclusivity and harmony among its workforce.
As Sarawak continues to modernise, events like these reinforce the importance of cultural traditions in shaping community identity.
For MBKS, the celebration highlighted the balance between professional responsibilities and cultural appreciation, ensuring that staff remain connected to the values that define Sarawak’s society.
The Ramah Tamah Gawai Dayak celebration at MBKS demonstrated how cultural festivities can strengthen institutional bonds, encourage collaboration, and inspire staff to continue delivering high-quality services to the people of Kuching South.
