LIMBANG – The Ministry of Transport has reaffirmed its commitment to widening access to legal driving licences through the MyLesen B2 Programme and the MyLesen B2 School Programme (MyB2S), ensuring that more Sarawakians benefit from these initiatives.
Deputy Minister of Transport, Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, revealed that 2,300 participants across Sarawak have successfully obtained licences under the MyLesen B2 Programme in 2026.
Of this number, 506 were from Limbang Division, reflecting the government’s focus on extending opportunities to communities in northern Sarawak.
Speaking at the Sarawak State-Level MyLesen B2 Programme Driving Licence Presentation Ceremony at Waterfront Limbang, Hasbi acknowledged that financial constraints remain a barrier for many, particularly those from low-income households.
“Some have had to postpone their desire to have a driving license due to financial constraints, therefore, the government through the Ministry of Transport and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has taken an approach to help so that this opportunity is not only enjoyed by those who are able, but also by the people in urban, rural and remote areas,” he said.
The MyLesen B2 Programme is part of the ministry’s broader effort to expand access to legal driving licences, which in turn enhances employment opportunities and improves living standards.
In addition, the Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, is implementing the MyLesen B2 School (MyB2S) Programme.
This initiative targets 60,000 secondary school students nationwide, supported by an allocation of RM18.5 million.
In Sarawak, 2,600 students are expected to benefit, enabling eligible participants to obtain a driving licence free of charge before entering the workforce.
Hasbi explained that this measure helps reduce financial burdens for families while preparing students for future employment.
The ministry is also working with JPJ to promote road safety through a Free Helmet Exchange Programme. This initiative encourages motorcyclists to adopt safer practices by using helmets that meet approved standards.
Hasbi expressed hope that the programme would raise awareness and reduce risks for riders and other road users.
By strengthening the implementation of MyLesen B2 and MyB2S, the Ministry of Transport aims to ensure equitable access to driving licences across Sarawak, while reinforcing safety and improving socio-economic opportunities for communities in both urban and rural areas.
