KUCHING – The Kuching District Police confirmed the arrest of a 64-year-old local man on 1 April 2026 for possession of a copy of another person’s identity card. The arrest took place at approximately 3.30pm in the vicinity of Sarawak General Hospital.
Checks revealed that the identity card copy contained details belonging to an individual who had passed away. Investigators further discovered that the suspect had never been issued an identity card since birth.
Initial findings indicated that the suspect had been in possession of and using the copy of the identity card for around ten years.
Authorities are now investigating the matter under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, which covers offences related to unlawful possession or use of identity documents.
Police have stressed the seriousness of identity card offences, noting that such cases can lead to wider implications, including fraud, misuse of public services, and breaches of national security.
The investigation aims to determine how the suspect obtained the copy and whether it was used for any unlawful activities.
The Kuching District Police Chief assured that the situation is under control and emphasised that enforcement will continue to safeguard the integrity of national registration systems.
Cases involving identity card misuse are rare but highlight the importance of strict compliance with registration laws.
Authorities have urged the public to ensure that all identity documents are valid and properly registered, reminding citizens that possession of false or unauthorised copies is a punishable offence.
The suspect remains under investigation, and further action will be taken once the inquiry is complete. Police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining public trust and protecting the integrity of official documentation in Sarawak.
