MIRI – The Premier of Sarawak has called on Muslims in the state to strengthen their religious values while embracing science and technology to ensure Sarawak’s continued progress as a sustainable and prosperous region.
Speaking at the Sarawak-level Ma’al Hijrah Celebration for the year 1448H/2026M, held at the Miri City Stadium on Tuesday morning, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg highlighted the importance of balancing spiritual growth with economic and technological advancement.
The event carried the theme “Ummah Maju Makmur”, reflecting aspirations for a thriving and harmonious society.
The Premier emphasised that the development of the Muslim community must align with broader economic growth to achieve comprehensive well-being.
He noted that the world is facing significant challenges, including climate change, geopolitical instability, and rapid technological shifts, all of which demand resilience and adaptability from society.
“Muslims must continue to strengthen their appreciation of religious teachings and be prepared to adapt to the rapidly changing world to ensure Sarawak continues to grow as a sustainable, developed and prosperous state,” he said.
He urged the community to adopt a wider perspective when confronting global changes, stressing that knowledge and faith should serve as guiding principles in navigating future uncertainties.
The Premier also underlined the importance of using technological advances wisely, ensuring they contribute positively to collective progress rather than creating division.
The ceremony, attended by community leaders, religious scholars, and members of the public, showcased Sarawak’s commitment to fostering unity and inclusivity.
The Premier reiterated that the state’s strength lies in the solidarity between Muslim and non-Muslim communities, which must be preserved to realise Sarawak’s long-term development agenda.
He explained that unity across diverse groups is vital for building resilience and ensuring the well-being of future generations.
This approach, he said, reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of becoming a leading digital economy and a hub for sustainable energy in the region.
The Ma’al Hijrah celebration, which marks the Islamic New Year, provided a platform for reflection on values of perseverance, knowledge, and community spirit.
It also reinforced Sarawak’s aspiration to balance tradition with modernity, ensuring that religious principles remain central while embracing innovation and scientific progress.
By linking faith with science and technology, the premier’s message underscored Sarawak’s ambition to position itself as a forward-looking state, capable of addressing global challenges while safeguarding cultural and spiritual heritage.
