KUCHING – A solemn atmosphere pervaded Dataran Perayaan in Petra Jaya this morning as the state commemorated its annual Heroes’ Day.
The 2026 ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have dedicated their lives to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and security.
The event was presided over by His Excellency the Governor of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
Accompanied by his consort, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Hajjah Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, the head of state arrived at the venue promptly at eight o’clock in the morning.
Their arrival marked the beginning of a series of formal proceedings designed to honour both living and fallen defenders of the country.
Upon stepping onto the parade ground, Tun Pehin Sri was received with full military honours. The Main Guard of Honour team stood at attention while the national anthem resonated across the square.
This traditional welcome underscored the gravity of the occasion and the deep respect accorded to the office of the governor.
Following the musical tribute, the governor proceeded to inspect the guard, led by Lieutenant Colonel Ferry Shahrul Rizal bin Roslan, the Commanding Officer of the Tenth Battalion of the Border Regiment.
The inspection party reviewed a substantial contingent comprising fourteen officers and four hundred and forty-one members.
This group included three officers and one hundred and two other ranks from the regiment, demonstrating the scale of military participation in the event.
The visual display of discipline and unity was further enhanced by the presence of four additional detachments.
These units represented a cross-section of the nation’s security apparatus, including the Malaysian Armed Forces, the Royal Malaysian Police, the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association, and the Malaysian Police Retired and Former Police Association.
High-ranking officials from the state government were also in attendance to show their support. Representing the Premier of Sarawak was YB Dato Sri Haji Karim Rahman bin Hamzah, who serves as the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts as well as the Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development.
He was joined by his wife, YBhg. Datin Sri Hajah Zuraini binti Abdul Jabbar. Other notable dignitaries included YBhg. Datu Felicia Tan Ya Hua, the Deputy Secretary of the Sarawak Government for Administration, along with various department heads and community leaders.
The ceremonial proceedings featured several cultural and patriotic elements intended to evoke a sense of national pride. A significant moment occurred during the lowering of the Jalur Gemilang, accompanied by the sounding of the final beat.
This was followed by a choral performance and the screening of a montage video that highlighted historical moments of bravery.
A particularly moving segment involved the recitation of a poem titled “Maruah Yang Tidak Diwali”. The piece was crafted by Major General Mohd Sobirin bin Haji Mohd Yusuf, Sergeant Mohammad Nazari bin Abdul Manan, and Corporal Muhammad Hafiz bin Berahim.
It was performed live by Sergeant Mohammad Nazari and Corporal Muhammad Hafiz, both serving with the Signal Squadron of the Third Infantry Brigade. Their delivery added an emotional depth to the ceremony, connecting the audience with the themes of honour and duty.
The core purpose of the gathering was to recognise individual acts of courage. During the ceremony, the governor was introduced to the recipients of the Brave Commander’s Medal.
Six individuals were honoured for their exceptional service: Waren Officer Satu (B) Beliang son of Bali, Sergeant (B) Mereng son of Imang, Lance Corporal (B) Unggek son of Atin, Lance Corporal (B) Bajau son of Ladi, Sergeant (B) Dajai son of Anggie, and Sub Inspector (B) Mohamad bin Salim. Their recognition highlighted the personal risks taken by security personnel in the line of duty.
As the event drew to a close, the glorious flag was raised amidst the sounding of the dawn hammer, symbolising a new day and continued vigilance.
Sahibul Fadilah, the Grand Imam of Sarawak, YBhg. Dato Haji Mustapha Kamal bin Ahmad Fauzi led the congregation in prayer, seeking blessings for the nation and its protectors.
The ceremony concluded with the playing of Negaraku and the state anthem, leaving attendees with a renewed sense of appreciation for the heroes who ensure peace and stability.
Heroes’ Day remains a critical annual observance in Sarawak. It provides a structured opportunity for the public and government alike to acknowledge the unwavering commitment of the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Royal Malaysian Police.
Whether through active service or past contributions, these individuals form the backbone of national defence, deserving of enduring gratitude and respect.
