KUCHING — In a night filled with tradition and cultural reverence, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng represented Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, at the grand celebration of Guan Sheng Di Jun’s (Guan Gong) birthday hosted by Kuching Yi Qi Tang Guan Gong Temple.

Speaking on behalf of Dr Sim, Dato Wee delivered a powerful address underscoring the continued relevance of Guan Gong’s virtues of loyalty, righteousness, courage, and integrity — values deeply rooted in the Chinese community and applicable to modern city governance.

“Guan Gong is not just a war hero from history. He is a timeless symbol of moral strength and unity. His legacy teaches us the importance of staying loyal, acting with justice, and showing courage in serving the people,” said Dato Wee during his speech.

He highlighted that MBKS, under the leadership of Dr Sim, has always upheld these principles, particularly in ensuring fair treatment to all citizens, regardless of race or religion, and in striving to maintain a clean, safe, and vibrant South Kuching.

Dato Wee also acknowledged the vital role of Yi Qi Tang not only as a religious sanctuary but also as a hub for community bonding, charity and cultural continuity. “Temples like Yi Qi Tang are more than places of worship—they are the heartbeat of our communities. They bring people together, teach moral values, and support those in need,” he added.

The event featured religious rituals, traditional performances and a community banquet, reflecting Kuching’s multicultural harmony and deep respect for heritage.
