Ordinary Malaysians Turned Heroes in River Rescue

Ordinary Malaysians Turned Heroes in River Rescue

KUCHING – What began as a terrifying accident under Satok Bridge quickly turned into a story of courage and unity, as ordinary bystanders risked their lives to save three men from drowning.

At about 6.17pm, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Petra Jaya received a distress call reporting that a car had plunged into the river near Kubah Ria. A team was immediately deployed to the scene.

By the time firefighters arrived, the car was already partially submerged. But in an inspiring show of bravery, several members of the public had jumped into the water without hesitation.

Armed with nothing more than strength, quick thinking, and a water hose found on the riverbank, the rescuers formed a human chain. Their teamwork prevented the vehicle from drifting further away, buying precious minutes to free the trapped men.

The young rescuers, aged between 25 and 44, later shared with Sarawak Edition that the river’s calm conditions helped them carry out the operation. Still, the victims inside were visibly panicked and semi-conscious, making the task dangerous. Breaking a car window, the rescuers managed to pull the men out one by one.

One victim was taken by ambulance to hospital before Bomba’s team could arrive. The remaining two were also confirmed safe. No details about the victims have been released so far.

While Bomba confirmed that their personnel did not conduct an actual rescue, they acknowledged the critical role played by the public.

The dramatic episode highlights not only the fragility of life but also the courage and unity that Malaysians can summon in moments of crisis. The selflessness of those who acted without waiting for help will long be remembered as an example of community spirit in action.
