MIRI — Two men lost their lives after they were trapped inside a trailer carrying heavy machinery during an accident at the traffic light intersection along Jalan Miri Bypass on Tuesday evening.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre said they received an emergency call at 4.20pm. A team from the Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station was immediately deployed to the location.
Upon arrival, firefighters found both victims trapped inside the trailer. The situation was complicated because the heavy machinery on the trailer had shifted during the impact, making it impossible to reach the victims safely.
According to JBPM, the first step taken by the rescue team was to open the driver’s side door to create enough space for Ministry of Health (KKM) medical officers to conduct an initial assessment. Sadly, both men were confirmed dead at the scene.
Due to the position and weight of the machinery, the operation required additional support. A crane was brought in to lift and move the equipment, allowing firefighters to continue the process of removing the victims from the wreckage.
The bodies were later handed over to the police for further investigation. Authorities are still determining what caused the crash and how the machinery shifted with such force.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by heavy vehicle drivers, especially those transporting oversized or heavy loads. Jalan Miri Bypass, known for its busy traffic flow, has seen several similar cases over the years, reminding all road users to stay alert, particularly when passing or following large vehicles.
Police are expected to issue an official report once investigations are complete.
