SIBU — A coordinated effort involving enforcement and welfare agencies was carried out in Sibu town to address growing concerns over homelessness and destitution in the district. The operation reflects a firm and traditional approach long practised in Malaysia, where community order and social responsibility go hand in hand.
The integrated operation was led by the Sibu Division Resident’s Office through the Sibu District Homeless and Destitute Committee. It was conducted following public complaints about the presence of homeless individuals in several tourist hotspot areas around the town. These complaints raised concerns about public safety, cleanliness, and the overall image of Sibu as a developing urban centre.
Among the agencies involved was the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) Sibu District, which played a key role in providing screening and support services. According to officials, the operation was not meant to punish those found on the streets, but to identify their needs and offer appropriate assistance through a structured and humane process.
The main objective of the initiative was to gather accurate information on homeless and destitute individuals, understand the root causes of their situation, and find comprehensive solutions that benefit both the affected individuals and the wider community. Authorities stressed that long-term solutions require cooperation between government agencies, healthcare providers, and social welfare bodies.
AADK Sibu District confirmed its commitment to integrated support, particularly in cases where drug or substance abuse may be involved. Screening was conducted during the operation to detect possible drug use among individuals identified. Those who tested positive or were suspected of substance abuse issues would be considered for rehabilitation programmes aimed at recovery and reintegration into society.
At the same time, individuals believed to be experiencing mental health problems were referred to Sibu Hospital for further medical examination and professional assessment. This step reflects the authorities’ recognition that homelessness is often linked to deeper health and social issues that cannot be ignored.
Officials said similar integrated operations may be carried out from time to time to ensure public well-being while safeguarding the dignity of vulnerable groups. The approach taken in Sibu underlines a forward-looking commitment rooted in proven methods, where enforcement is balanced with care, order with compassion, and development with social responsibility.
