KUCHING — Members of the public are invited to gather at the iconic Kuching Waterfront this Saturday evening to take part in a special community Iftar programme that offers free food packs to visitors and residents alike.
The programme, scheduled to begin at 4.30pm, is organised by Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) together with Majlis Islam Sarawak as part of the Ramadan 2026 celebrations in the city. The event is open to everyone, including Muslims observing the holy month as well as visitors who wish to experience the festive Ramadan atmosphere in the heart of Kuching.
The organisers said the gathering aims to bring communities together and promote the spirit of unity and sharing that is central to Ramadan. Residents from areas such as Petra Jaya, Santubong, Demak, Bako and Boyan are encouraged to come early with their family members and friends to join the breaking of fast.
Visitors attending the programme will receive free Iftar packs that include bottled water, traditional kuih muih and local dishes commonly served during Ramadan. Among the food prepared for distribution are bubur lambuk and the well-loved Sarawak specialty bubur pedas, both popular choices for breaking fast among locals.
Community volunteers and organisers will begin distributing the food before sunset so that those observing the fast can prepare to break it together once the Maghrib call to prayer is heard. Organisers expect a lively and welcoming atmosphere as people gather along the scenic riverfront area to share a meal and spend time with the community.
Events such as this have long been part of the Ramadan tradition in many parts of Malaysia, where mosques, community groups and local authorities work together to provide free meals for the public. In Kuching, the waterfront area has often served as a gathering point for cultural and community activities, making it a suitable venue for a large public Iftar.
Apart from the food distribution, the programme also offers an opportunity for people of different backgrounds to experience the warmth of Ramadan traditions. Visitors who are not fasting are also welcome to attend and observe the unique cultural atmosphere that comes with the breaking of fast.
Organisers have encouraged attendees to arrive early to secure their food packs and to enjoy the peaceful evening setting along the Sarawak River. With the first Iftar gathering of the season expected to draw a large crowd, the event is anticipated to be a memorable start to Ramadan activities in Kuching this year.
As the sun sets and the community gathers around shared meals, the programme reflects the true meaning of Ramadan — generosity, gratitude and togetherness.
