The turbulence struck while passengers were having breakfast, causing the Boeing airliner to plummet without warning. One passenger, Jerry, traveling with six family members to a wedding in Australia, recounted the terrifying experience: “It was so sudden, there’s no warning at all. I ended up hitting my head on the ceiling, my wife did too, and some poor people ended up doing somersaults.”
The aircraft, on the last leg of its 12-hour journey, was over Thailand when it suddenly dropped 6,000 feet. The pilot declared an emergency and requested an immediate landing in Bangkok, the closest airport. The plane, carrying 21 passengers and 18 crew members, touched down around 3:45 PM local time, where ambulances awaited to transport the injured.
