The delegation was headed by SAA President Gurvir Singh Sandhu, with the Attorney General of Sarawak, Dato Sri Safri bin Ali, also in attendance. The meeting brought together senior members of the association, including Timothy Lim Teng (Vice President, Sibu), Lee Jin Wen (Vice President, Miri), Liew Tang Chieh (Vice President, Kuching), Janting Antalai (Vice President, Bintulu), Christine S. H. Lim (Honorary Secretary), Kay Ting Huong Kheng (Honorary Treasurer), Alan Bong Kit Khoon (Assistant Treasurer), and Rozy Tijan Robinson (Central Committee Member).
Discussions centred on strengthening the legal profession in Sarawak, enhancing the state’s judicial framework, and ensuring that laws remain relevant to the evolving needs of society. The Governor highlighted the importance of continuous legal reform and praised the association’s role in safeguarding the rule of law.
During the session, Tun Pehin Sri reflected on his tenure as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) in 2021, where he was actively involved in legislative matters.
He underscored the significance of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), stressing that its provisions must be fully understood by the people to ensure Sarawak’s rights are upheld within the federation.
The Governor expressed appreciation for the association’s commitment to advancing the legal profession and dignifying the state’s judicial system.
He emphasised the need for close collaboration between legal practitioners and the government, noting that such partnerships are vital for the well-being of Sarawakians.
The meeting also touched on the work of the Law Reform Committee, which is expected to drive progressive changes in Sarawak’s justice system.
The Governor voiced hope that the committee’s initiatives would serve as a catalyst for modernisation, making the legal system more effective and accessible to the public.
Observers note that the SAA has long played a pivotal role in supporting legal education, professional development, and reforms in Sarawak.
Its engagement with the Governor reflects ongoing efforts to ensure that the state’s legal institutions remain robust and responsive to contemporary challenges.
The courtesy visit reinforced the shared vision of both the state leadership and the legal community: to uphold justice, strengthen governance, and ensure that Sarawak’s legal framework continues to evolve in line with societal progress.
