MIRI – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to using culture as a foundation for unity, stressing its importance in fostering peace and cooperation across Borneo.
Speaking at the opening of the Taste of Borneo Cultural Carnival 4.0 on 4 July, the premier emphasised that cultural diversity must not only be preserved but also valued as a cornerstone of social harmony and Sarawak’s development.
“We not only want to show our culture and traditions, but most importantly, we appreciate our culture and traditions. With that appreciation, we can live together and respect each other,” he said.
He explained that Sarawak’s stability is rooted in the ability of its people to practise their respective traditions and beliefs freely, contributing to a society that benefits all communities.
This harmony, he added, is what enables Sarawak to continue progressing while maintaining peace. The Premier highlighted Sarawak’s aspiration to remain a peaceful region and serve as an example in managing diversity.
He noted that cultural appreciation strengthens ties not only within Sarawak but also across Borneo, where cooperation is vital for prosperity and mutual respect.
Welcoming delegations from Indonesia and China to the carnival, Abang Johari described their participation as a continuation of long-standing cultural and diplomatic relations.
He recalled that Sarawak’s ties with China date back to the voyages of Admiral Cheng Ho, which laid the foundation for trade and friendship that remain strong today.
He stressed that regional peace must be safeguarded to allow countries in the area to explore new opportunities together, particularly in addressing climate change and economic transformation.
By maintaining harmony, he said, Borneo can position itself as a region that balances cultural heritage with modern challenges.
The Taste of Borneo Cultural Carnival, now in its fourth edition, has become a platform for showcasing traditions while promoting unity among diverse communities.
The event reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of cultural diplomacy, where heritage is not only celebrated but also used to strengthen international ties. Abang Johari’s remarks underline the role of culture in shaping Sarawak’s identity and future.
By embracing diversity, the state aims to ensure that peace and cooperation remain central to its growth, while setting an example for neighbouring regions.
