Sarawak Premier Joins Friday Prayers at An-Nur Mosque Sibu

SIBU – The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, attended Friday prayers at the An-Nur Mosque in Sibu on 10 July 2026 as part of his official programme in the town.

The Premier’s presence at the mosque was warmly received by worshippers, who gathered to perform the weekly congregational prayers. Following the service, he took time to meet members of the congregation, exchanging greetings and engaging in friendly conversation. Many worshippers also took the opportunity to capture photographs with him, reflecting the cordial atmosphere of the visit.

Accompanying the Premier was the Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development of Sarawak, YB Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee. His attendance alongside the Premier highlighted the importance of community engagement by state leaders, particularly in fostering closer ties with residents at the grassroots level.

The visit to An-Nur Mosque was not only a religious observance but also a symbolic gesture of solidarity with the local Muslim community. Such occasions are often seen as opportunities for leaders to demonstrate accessibility and strengthen bonds with citizens beyond formal government settings.

Community interactions of this nature have long been part of Sarawak’s leadership tradition, where leaders regularly attend religious and cultural events across the state. These engagements are viewed as a way to maintain harmony and inclusivity in Sarawak’s diverse society, which is home to multiple ethnic and religious groups.

The Premier’s schedule in Sibu extended beyond the mosque visit. Later in the day, he was expected to officiate at the Loyal Service Medal Ceremony, an event recognising individuals for their dedication and contributions to public service. The ceremony forms part of his wider working visit to Sibu, which includes meetings and engagements designed to strengthen ties between the state government and local communities.

Observers note that such visits often serve dual purposes: reinforcing the Premier’s connection with the people while also underlining the government’s commitment to community development. By attending both religious and civic events, the Premier demonstrates a balanced approach to leadership that values cultural traditions alongside administrative responsibilities.

The An-Nur Mosque, where the prayers were held, is one of Sibu’s prominent religious landmarks. It regularly hosts community activities and serves as a focal point for worshippers in the town. The Premier’s attendance at Friday prayers there underscores the mosque’s role as a centre of communal life and its importance in fostering unity among residents.

Local worshippers expressed appreciation for the Premier’s visit, noting that his willingness to join them in prayer and conversation reflects a leadership style grounded in humility and approachability. Such gestures are often seen as reinforcing trust between the government and the people, particularly in regions where community bonds are highly valued.

The Premier’s working visit to Sibu is part of a broader itinerary across Sarawak, where he continues to engage with communities in various districts. These visits are expected to highlight ongoing development initiatives while also providing opportunities for direct dialogue with citizens.

As Sarawak continues to pursue economic growth and social progress, the Premier’s presence at events like Friday prayers serves as a reminder of the state’s emphasis on unity, inclusivity, and respect for cultural and religious practices. His participation at An-Nur Mosque in Sibu reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with the people and ensuring that leadership remains connected to everyday community life.
