SARATOK – A potential hazard to residents in a rural village was neutralised this weekend after the Civil Defence Force (APM) successfully removed a dangerous wasp nest.
The operation took place in Kampung Sessang on Saturday, 18 July 2026, following a complaint from a concerned member of the public regarding the presence of aggressive insects near a residential property.
The Saratok District APM responded promptly to the distress call, recognising the risk posed by ground wasps, which are known for their painful stings and defensive behaviour when their nests are threatened.
A team from ASPA Squad 03, comprising three members, was deployed to the location to assess the situation and carry out the necessary removal procedures.
Upon arrival, the personnel identified the nest situated under the roof eaves adjacent to a house. This location presented a significant danger to the occupants and anyone passing by, as the proximity to human activity increased the likelihood of accidental disturbance and subsequent attacks.
The team quickly formulated a plan to eliminate the threat while ensuring the safety of the residents and themselves.
Adhering to strict safety protocols, the APM members donned full personal protective equipment (PPE) before commencing the operation.
This gear is essential for protecting responders from stings, particularly when dealing with large or aggressive colonies.
The use of appropriate tools and techniques allowed the team to destroy the nest efficiently without causing damage to the surrounding structure.
The operation was completed safely and without incident, removing the immediate threat to the community.
The successful execution of the task highlights the training and preparedness of the Saratok APM unit in handling various types of emergency and non-emergency public assistance cases.
Beyond disaster relief, such operations are crucial for maintaining daily safety and peace of mind for residents in rural areas. Following the completion of the task, the APM Saratok District issued a advisory to the public.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings of poisonous insect nests, including those of wasps, hornets, or bees, to the authorities immediately. Early reporting allows for controlled removal before the colonies grow larger and more dangerous.
Unattended nests can pose serious health risks, particularly to children, the elderly, and individuals with allergies to insect stings.
In severe cases, multiple stings can lead to anaphylactic shock, requiring urgent medical attention. By proactively addressing these hazards, the community can prevent potentially life-threatening incidents.
The APM emphasised that attempting to remove such nests without proper equipment and expertise is highly discouraged.
DIY methods often provoke the insects, leading to aggressive swarming and injuries. Professional handling ensures that the nest is destroyed completely and that the area is safe for habitation.
This incident serves as a reminder of the diverse roles played by civil defence units in Sarawak. From flood rescue to pest control, the APM remains a versatile and reliable resource for the public.
Their willingness to assist with seemingly minor issues contributes significantly to the overall well-being of the community.
Residents in Kampung Sessang expressed relief at the swift action taken by the squad. The removal of the nest has restored a sense of security to the household, allowing them to go about their daily activities without fear of attack.
The Saratok District Operations Control Center continues to encourage public cooperation in maintaining safety.
By working together, authorities and residents can create a safer living environment, free from preventable hazards. The prompt response in this case demonstrates the effectiveness of this collaborative approach.
