KUCHING, Jan 2: Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching witnessed a heartwarming moment as its first elderly couple tied the knot, proving that love has no age limit. The union of Wong Yuan Chang, 65, and Molly Teo, 80, marks a significant milestone for the institution, inspiring the community with their story of companionship and hope.
The couple, both of whom had lost their previous spouses, formed a deep connection rooted in shared values and mutual understanding. Their wedding was made possible with the support of the National Registration Department (NRD) and the local church community.
Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development, highlighted the significance of this event. “Age should never be a barrier to happiness. Companionship is crucial for the elderly to combat loneliness and depression,” she said during the ceremony at NRD Sarawak Office, Jalan Simpang Tiga.
Fatimah emphasized that the couple met all criteria set by Rumah Seri Kenangan, including being free from mental illness and contagious diseases. They also had no immediate family to care for them, which allowed them to seek companionship at the institution.
The modest yet joyful wedding was attended by fellow residents and church members, who provided moral and spiritual support to the couple. Fatimah added, “This marriage showcases the importance of relationships built on shared values, religious beliefs, and hobbies. Wong and Molly actively engage in religious studies, singing, and storytelling, which strengthen their bond.”
As the first wedding at Rumah Seri Kenangan Kuching in 2025, the event serves as a beacon of hope for other residents. It underscores the importance of enabling the elderly to lead fulfilling lives, regardless of their age.
