Civil Defence Force Destroys Stinging Fly Nest in Saratok

The District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) confirmed that three officers were deployed to the site after receiving complaints about the insects, which had built a nest on a fruit tree in the garden.

The presence of the stinging flies posed a potential hazard to the community, particularly to those living nearby.

The operation was carried out using a controlled burning technique, a method often employed to ensure nests are destroyed effectively without leaving remnants that could allow the insects to return.

The team reported that the procedure was completed safely, with no injuries or damage recorded. All personnel returned to PKOD Saratok once the task was concluded.

Stinging flies, similar to wasps, are known for their aggressive behaviour when disturbed. Their stings can cause painful reactions and, in some cases, severe allergic responses.

Such insects often build nests in gardens, trees, or structures close to human activity, making them a recurring concern for residents in rural and semi-urban areas.

APM Saratok emphasised that swift reporting of such cases is vital to prevent accidents. The unit continues to remind the public that professional intervention is the safest way to handle insect nests, as attempting removal without expertise can lead to dangerous outcomes.

This incident reflects the broader responsibilities of the Civil Defence Force, which regularly responds to wildlife-related emergencies, natural disasters, and community hazards.

Their readiness and rapid response highlight the importance of maintaining operational integrity and protecting public safety.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and to contact APM Saratok directly if they encounter similar threats.

The Civil Defence Force’s commitment to its motto of “Ready, Fast & With Integrity” reinforces its role as a trusted guardian of community welfare across Sarawak.
