KUCHING – North Kuching City Hall (DBKU) marked Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Week 2026 with the organisation of the OSH Fun Walk, also known as the 1000 Steps programme.
The event drew the participation of approximately 300 DBKU employees, who completed a 1.3-kilometre route in a relaxed and spirited atmosphere.
The walk was designed to encourage a culture of healthy living while raising awareness about the importance of occupational safety and health among workers.
Participants were reminded that workplace well-being extends beyond physical safety, encompassing mental resilience, cooperation, and discipline.
Mrs Fatimah binti Jamail, acting director of DBKU, officiated the flag-off session. She highlighted the significance of such initiatives in reinforcing the values of teamwork and collective responsibility within the workplace.
The event also served as a platform to strengthen bonds among employees, fostering unity and shared purpose.
OSH Week is celebrated globally, with the International Labour Organization (ILO) emphasising the importance of psychosocial well-being and safe working environments.
DBKU’s Fun Walk aligns with these international objectives, reflecting the council’s commitment to embedding occupational health and safety practices into its organisational culture.
Beyond the walk itself, DBKU continues to implement awareness programmes and initiatives aimed at creating a safe, healthy, and productive work environment.
These efforts include educational campaigns, training sessions, and community engagement activities designed to instil a deeper understanding of workplace safety standards.
The Fun Walk also underscored DBKU’s dedication to promoting both physical and mental wellness. By encouraging employees to participate in recreational activities, the council aims to reduce stress, improve morale, and enhance productivity.
Such initiatives are seen as vital in ensuring that occupational safety is not only a regulatory requirement but also a shared value embraced by all staff.
Community observers have noted that DBKU’s proactive approach to OSH Week demonstrates its leadership in workplace safety and health promotion.
The council’s initiatives contribute to building a stronger, more resilient workforce capable of adapting to challenges while maintaining high standards of service delivery.
The OSH Fun Walk concluded with participants expressing appreciation for the opportunity to engage in a meaningful activity that combined fitness, awareness, and camaraderie.
DBKU reaffirmed its commitment to continue organising similar programmes in the future, ensuring that occupational safety and health remain central to its mission of serving the community.
