LUBOK ANTU – A tense moment unfolded in Sarang Bee, Lubok Antu, on Tuesday morning when a vehicle was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross a flooded road.
Heavy rainfall had caused water levels to rise rapidly, creating hazardous conditions across several routes in the district.
The driver, caught in the surge, managed to escape from the vehicle before the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) team arrived. He was later moved to a safer area by personnel on duty.
APM Lubok Antu confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident. However, the vehicle remains stranded at the scene, highlighting the dangers posed by sudden floods in rural areas.
The affected route has since been declared unsafe, with authorities urging the public to seek alternative roads until conditions improve.
Continuous rain has been reported across Sarawak in recent days, leading to flash floods in low-lying areas.
According to disaster management guidelines, motorists are strongly advised against attempting to cross flooded roads, as currents can be deceptively powerful even at shallow depths.
The Civil Defence Force reiterated that strong currents are not ordinary challenges and should never be underestimated.
Local residents have expressed concern about the increasing frequency of flood-related incidents in Lubok Antu and neighbouring districts.
Community leaders have called for greater awareness campaigns to remind the public of the risks associated with driving through floodwaters.
The Civil Defence Force continues to emphasise its readiness to assist during emergencies, reinforcing its motto of “Together to Protect – Ready to Help”.
Their swift response in Sarang Bee demonstrates the importance of operational preparedness and community cooperation in safeguarding lives during extreme weather events.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with warnings issued for further rainfall in the coming days.
Residents are encouraged to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy downpours, and report emergencies promptly to ensure rapid intervention.
This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of floods in Sarawak and the need for vigilance among road users.
By prioritising safety and adhering to official advice, communities can reduce risks and prevent tragedies during adverse weather conditions.
