Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng urged business and property owners to prepare for the temporary power cut by taking precautionary measures such as unplugging electrical appliances, ensuring frozen food is properly stored, and maintaining suitable conditions for fish tanks during the outage.

The maintenance work follows an inspection by Sarawak Energy’s Sesco, which identified three electrical hotspots along Padungan. The area is home to over 100 century-old shophouses, making it essential to address potential fire risks.

“Initially, we planned to carry out the shutdown before Chinese New Year but postponed it to avoid disrupting businesses during the festive period,” Wee explained during his ShallWeeTalk live session.
“However, we can no longer delay the work. It’s our responsibility to protect the safety of residents and the heritage buildings in this historic area,” he added.

Dato Wee stressed the importance of regular electrical maintenance and engaging certified electricians for wiring inspections and necessary repairs.
“Since I assumed office, we’ve already seen two fire incidents in the area. Regular maintenance can help prevent fires and save both lives and property,” he emphasised.

He appealed for public cooperation and understanding during the temporary inconvenience, highlighting that these measures are essential to safeguard Padungan’s unique heritage and prevent future accidents.
