MUKAH, June 25 — A foreign worker has been arrested after allegedly injuring a Auxiliary police officer by throwing a parang during an incident at an oil palm plantation workers’ housing area along Jalan Sebakong, Mukah, on Tuesday.
Mukah District Police Chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said the incident happened at about 4.40pm on June 24 after police received information that a plantation worker was creating a disturbance at the workers’ quarters.
According to him, a police officer was immediately sent to the location to investigate the report. Upon arriving at the scene, the officer found a plantation worker behaving aggressively while holding a parang.
The officer attempted to calm the situation and resolve the disturbance peacefully. However, the suspect suddenly threw the parang towards the officer.
The weapon struck the officer on the neck, causing injuries. Despite the attack, several plantation workers at the scene quickly assisted in restraining the suspect before he could cause further harm.
During the struggle to detain the suspect, the man reportedly became aggressive and suffered injuries himself while being restrained.
Both the injured police officer and the suspect were taken to Mukah Hospital for treatment.
The 45-year-old police officer received 12 stitches for the wound on his neck and was later allowed to return home after receiving outpatient treatment.
Following the incident, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Mukah District Police Headquarters re-arrested the suspect to facilitate further investigations.
Police also seized a 53-centimetre parang believed to have been used during the incident as part of the investigation.
Initial investigations found that the suspect, a 39-year-old foreign national, was believed to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Police also believe the disturbance was linked to a dispute between the suspect and the plantation company’s management.
Further checks revealed that the suspect did not possess valid travel documents to remain in the country.
The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by using a dangerous weapon.
In addition, police have opened a separate investigation under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for staying in Malaysia without valid travel documents.
The suspect has been remanded at the Mukah Police Station pending the completion of investigations and further legal action, including the setting of a court charge date.
Mukah police reminded the public to remain calm when dealing with disputes and urged anyone facing conflicts to seek assistance through the proper authorities instead of resorting to violence.
The police also expressed appreciation to the plantation workers who assisted in restraining the suspect, helping to prevent the situation from becoming more serious while ensuring the safety of those present.
Authorities said investigations into the case are ongoing.
