LUNDU – The Lundu District Council (MDL) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability with the launch of the Zero Waste Village Campaign 2026 4.0, held at Lundu Town Square on 4 July.
Now in its fourth edition, the campaign aims to instil waste reduction, recycling, and solid waste separation practices among the local community.
The initiative seeks to ease pressure on the district’s waste disposal system while ensuring cleanliness and sustainability. It also reflects MDL’s broader vision of making Lundu a clean, beautiful, and waste-free district.
The campaign’s officiation ceremony was led by Opar State Assemblyman Billy Sujang, who emphasised the importance of addressing the rising volume of solid waste.
He warned that poor management could lead to environmental pollution and health risks. “Big changes start with small actions.
The practice of maintaining cleanliness must start from home, the office, the coffee shop, in vehicles and wherever we are,” he said.
Billy Sujang also highlighted the need to adopt the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R) concept in daily life. He encouraged residents to reuse materials such as bottles, cans, tyres, and other recyclable items.
Additionally, he reminded the public of the importance of eliminating stagnant water sources to prevent the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, which spread dengue fever.
“Let’s not provide a ‘five-star hotel’ for Aedes mosquitoes. If these breeding grounds can be eliminated, the risk of dengue transmission can also be reduced,” he added.
Ahead of the ceremony, a large-scale gotong-royong activity was carried out, involving two main routes in Lundu town.
The first route began at Borong King and ended at Lundu Town Square, while the second started at Pehin Sri Haji Adenan Satem Mosque and also concluded at the square.
The community clean-up was joined by Tanjong Datu State Assemblyman Azizul Annuar bin Pehin Sri Adenan, who participated alongside MDL staff and local residents.
The activity demonstrated strong cooperation between leaders, government agencies, and the community in cultivating sustainable waste management practices.
The Zero Waste Village Campaign 2026 4.0 underscores MDL’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental awareness and community responsibility.
By combining education, practical action, and community participation, the council hopes to inspire long-term behavioural change that will contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future for Lundu.
The campaign’s slogan, “Clean Lundu, Prosperous Community”, reflects the council’s vision of aligning environmental sustainability with community well-being.
