BINTULU – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) launched a targeted enforcement operation in Bintulu on 7 July 2026 following public complaints about vehicles using non-compliant HID and LED lights.
The operation, carried out by the Bintulu JPJ Operations Unit at Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi, aimed to address concerns that such modifications pose risks to road safety by impairing visibility for other drivers.
During the exercise, officers inspected 136 vehicles of various types. Several offences were identified, including driving without a licence, expired licences, and the use of HID or LED lights that failed to meet regulatory standards.
Additional technical violations involving vehicle specifications were also detected. Enforcement action was taken against all offenders in accordance with existing laws. JPJ Sarawak stressed that complaints from the public are treated with utmost seriousness.
Officials noted that unauthorised lighting modifications are not only illegal but can also contribute to accidents by creating glare that reduces visibility for other road users
The department reaffirmed its commitment to continuous enforcement to ensure vehicles comply with safety standards. Authorities reminded motorists that road safety depends on strict adherence to regulations.
JPJ Sarawak urged vehicle owners to avoid unauthorised modifications and to ensure their vehicles meet approved specifications. By doing so, drivers contribute to a safer and more comfortable environment for all road users.
The HID/LED Lamp Ops forms part of JPJ’s wider strategy to strengthen enforcement across Sarawak. Similar operations have been conducted in other districts, targeting issues such as overloaded vehicles, expired licences, and misuse of permits.
These initiatives reflect the department’s broader mission to uphold road safety and protect the public from hazards caused by non-compliance.
Officials highlighted that cooperation between enforcement agencies and the public is vital. JPJ Sarawak encouraged continued community vigilance, noting that public feedback helps identify risks and supports proactive enforcement.
The department pledged to maintain regular operations and strengthen monitoring to reduce violations and enhance safety standards across the state. With road safety remaining a priority, JPJ Sarawak reiterated its call for responsible driving practices.
The department emphasised that compliance with the law is essential to prevent accidents and safeguard lives, reinforcing its message that every driver plays a role in building a safer road environment in Sarawak.
